The 1st day is difficult to dissect from a scouting-report standpoint because there are no pads, no contact and the intensity isn't exactly raging. But still, a couple of playmakers who stood out: CB Janoris Jenkins (instinctively jumped numerous passes, one resulting in an interception), WR David Nelson (reliable hands), WR Deonte Thompson (burned Jenkins on a deep route), LB Ryan Stamper (rarely looks clueless out there), OL Matt Patchan (for adding 30 pounds to his former 260 frame), DT Jaye Howard (surprisingly quick for his frame).
Absent: Starting SS Ahmad Black (back), backup RB Emmanuel Moody (ankle) and WR Carl Moore (undisclosed) sat out Thursday's morning practice session because they are "not 100 percent," according to a team spokesman. All injuries appear to be minor. As expected, LB Dustin Doe was not present Thursday after his July arrest for driving with a suspended license. Urban Meyer said Doe needs to resolve his legal issues before focusing on football, and Doe has two different court dates -- Aug. 24 and Oct. 1 -- for separate driving charges. Could be awhile. The SEC Rocks!
