Jefferson's status for No. 9 LSU's homecoming game against Louisiana Tech on Saturday remains up in the air."Jefferson took snaps, took throws," LSU coach Les Miles said. "He was a little gimped, but getting better. We'll kind of know more as we go forward. To be honest with you, I do feel good about him."
Jefferson hurt his ankle on a sack in the third quarter and did not return. Before the injury, he completed 10 of 17 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown and rushed six times for 31 yards in the first half.
Miles was asked if Jefferson could start and play at 75 or 80 percent.
"Well, I don't know," he said. "I'm going to view it all with time at hand. In other words, I'm going to look at tomorrow's practice and see how that goes. I know one thing, he throws the football very well, and he moves his feet well enough to command the pocket."
After the game Saturday, Jefferson predicted what would happen with his injury this week. He said he'd miss practice early in the week and return in the middle of the week and be ready to play in the game.
Miles was not ready to give the starting job to backup quarterback Jarrett Lee, who took the majority of snaps with the first team offense on Monday and Tuesday. Since Thursday practices are usually used only for polishing and Friday practices are often just a light walk through, Miles was asked, "At this point don't you have to operate on the assumption that Lee is your starting quarterback for Saturday?"
Miles said, "I don't necessarily buy that."
Lee completed 4 of 10 passes for 44 yards with an interception against Alabama. On the season, he has completed 9 of 18 passes for 89 yards and one touchdown with the one interception. Jefferson has completed 133 of 210 passes for 1,535 yards and 12 touchdowns with four interceptions.
Should Jefferson not be able to play and Lee starts, Miles said sophomore walk-on TC McCartney of Boulder, Colo., could enter the game as the No. 2 quarterback. Miles would like to avoid using true freshman quarterback Chris Garrett of Tupelo, Miss., so he can be redshirted.
"I think TC's pretty capable, too," Miles said. "I think we'll kind of go through practice and kind of see who's whom."
Miles also has Russell Shepard, who has played quarterback in spots in most of LSU's games this season, though he has not attempted a pass.
"He'll play some quarterback possibly as well," Miles said.
Shepard has rushed 31 times for 224 yards and two touchdowns on the season.
