Junior free safety Chris Culliver will miss Saturday's game at the University of Arkansas, University of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday.Although the listed reason for Culliver's absence is a recurring shoulder injury, Spurrier suggested things may be deeper as he described the junior's apparent lack of effort on several attempted tackles in the Tennessee game as “glaring.”
“Chris Culliver's shoulder has bothered him a bit and some other things have happened that he's taking this week off,” Spurrier said. “Hopefully, he'll be back next week ready to contribute to our success. Chris is out this game.”
Culliver is third on the team in tackles with 49. He has broken up seven passes and has one fumble recovery.
Spurrier said he is sending a message to the rest of the team.
“We had a little talk with our team that if you have an injury and you can't perform, you need to tell the coaches,” Spurrier said. “If that was the biggest problem, and we think it was, it was certainly embarrassing for all of us."
“Hopefully, that will not happen again.”
