Officials recommend extension for USC coach Steve Spurrier

Steve Spurrier has not forgotten his goal to leave South Carolina with more wins than any other Gamecocks’ coach.
And with the additional year USC plans to add to Spurrier's contract, the Head Ball Coach has done the new math for what it will take to catch Rex Enright.
USC's board of trustees is expected to approve a one-year extension that takes Spurrier’s contract through the end of the 2013 season. University president Harris Pastides and athletics director Eric Hyman will recommend the extension to the board soon, the school announced Tuesday.
Spurrier said he approached Hyman after realizing he had three years left on his contract. Coaches prefer to be under contract for at least four years to assure recruits they will be at the school for the duration of their careers.
“I like our freshmen and I like the guys coming in, and they need to know I certainly plan on being here four more years,” Spurrier said in a phone interview. “And if I'm going to be the all-time winning coach here - which I said that was my goal when I was hired – I’ve got to average about eight wins a year instead of seven. We hope to get up to that eight to 10 (wins) range soon.”
Spurrier is 35-27 in five seasons at USC and has had the Gamecocks bowl-eligible every year. Enright is No. 1 on USC's victories list with 64.
Spurrier, whose deal is worth $1.75 million a year, said he told Hyman not to worry about giving him a raise with the extension. Though Spurrier ranks in the bottom third among SEC coaches in compensation, he said he would prefer to see the money go to his assistants.
“I know I'm underpaid, but hopefully if I can get some more dough for the assistant coaches and … that'll help out,” he said.
Spurrier hopes his staff returns intact after a lot of turnover last year.
Spurrier said Youngstown State wanted USC first-year offensive line coach Eric Wolford to interview for its head-coaching vacancy. But Wolford told Spurrier he did not plan to pursue it.
Spurrier, who turns 65 in April, will receive a $1 million longevity bonus if he remains at USC through the end of the 2011 season.
