Bama's terms of the new deal and raise that Smart received from UA, is that the assistant coach received an additional $34,400 bonus for just showing up to work today.A clause in Smart's new contract stated that "should employee remain employed as defensive coordinator at University of March 1, 2010, employee shall receive an additional bonus of $34,400. The wording of the contract states that, Smart receive a bonus (20 percent to all assistants) for last season's success based on his 2009 salary.
Today's bonus added in, results in Smart's $750,000 salary now jumps beyond new Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who also makes $750,000.
The Bulldogs offered Grantham the same salary as Smart, who wound up turning down his alma mater after a few days of deliberation after the BCS national championship game.
Smart's new deal at Alabama more than doubled his base salary from the previous season. It runs through Feb. 28, 2013 and does not include a buyout if Smart leaves Alabama to accept a head coaching job at another school.
