Auburn football coach Gene Chizik made an impassioned defense of Cam Newton on Tuesday in the face an online report said his quarterback committed academic fraud at Florida, but he wasn't the only one in the athletic family showing support.
Athletics Director Jay Jacobs issued a statement earlier in the day that "these allegations and rumors about Cam Newton are unfortunate and sad." Even women's basketball coach Nell Fortner showed up for her press briefing before her season-opener wearing a Cam Newton jersey.
"I think he has represented this university well,'' Fortner said. "At Auburn, this is our athletic family. It's our family, and it's time to step up and it's time for everybody else to start stepping up and say, 'Hey, man, I think this story, it has no legs, and it's just ridiculous that is has gone on this far. So that's my opinion, and I'm just ready to step up and say enough's enough."
