The Big Ten led all conferences with five semifinalists, followed closely by the SEC’s four and the ACC’s three. The Big 12 had two players named, while the Pac-10 and independents had one apiece. LSU is the only school with two players to make the second-to-last cut.
The list of 16 players will be cut to three finalists Nov. 22, with the 2010 award being announced Dec. 9. The Bednarik, which has been presented annually since 1995, current Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald won the award the first two years, and the award went to Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh last year.
