According to the Bastrop Daily Enterprise, Mackey underwent surgery Thursday to repair torn meniscus in his left knee. The good news for the junior is that there’s a recovery of no more than four weeks, meaning he should be 100-percent healthy for the start of the spring sessions. After transferring from the JUCO ranks last year, Mackey took a redshirt for the 2010 season. In addition to Mackey, Nathan Stanley and another JUCO transfer, Zach Stoudt, will be vying for the starting job, although the former will enter the spring as the presumptive front-runner. There’s also a chance that West Virginia transfer Barry Brunetti could be in the QB mix as well. Brunetti is seeking a hardship waiver from the NCAA that would allow him to forgo sitting out the required transfer year.
