Arkansas Linebacker Gone!
Well here is the dirt from the SEC; for the 2nd time in less than 2 months and possibly for the last time. Arkansas linebacker Khiry Battle has been arrested.
According to the (NW Arkansas Morning News), Battle was arrested early Sunday morning(6/28/09)and charged with driving under the influence, violating the city’s noise ordinance and refusing to submit to submit to a breathalyzer test!(how is that one!)
Battle was pulled after police heard loud music coming from his vehicle. An odor of alcohol was detected after an officer approached the vehicle, leading to Battle’s arrest on multiple charges.
He was released from jail yesterday morning after posting an $830 bond.
The school has yet to comment on Battle’s latest skirmish with the law.
Early last month, Battle was involved in an on-campus argument with another student. After police responded to the disturbance and did a background check on the two involved, it was discovered that Battle had a warrant out for his arrest after failing to appear in court for a careless driving ticket.
He was subsequently arrested for failure to appear. The SEC Rocks

Auburn Tigers lose 3 more players!
Three players from the defensive side of the ball are off the Auburn football team. (more to come?) There is no word on whether they were kicked off the team or left on their own accord, as head coach Gene Chizik was on vacation and unavailable for comment.
Safety Christian Thompson, defensive tackle Jomarcus Savage and linebacker Marcus Jemison were all members of the 2008 recruiting class and were potential backups on the depth chart. This is the 2nd roster purge during Gene Chizik era at Auburn, as 4 players left the team back in January.
Of the 3 players leaving, Thompson was the first in line for playing time, as he was in the mix for a nickel back spot behind starting safeties Mike McNeil and Zac Etheridge. Both Savage and Jemison missed last seasons with injuries. The SEC Rocks!

The Baltimore Ravens,Ozzie Newsome,the TIDES',new Athletic Director?
The speculation linking former Alabama great and current Baltimore Ravens executive Ozzie Newsome to the Tide’s Athletic Director’s job has been ongoing for several years.
That speculation has been ratcheted up a notch or two of late as the current Athletic Director Mal Moore has come under fire for the NCAA Sanctions levied against the school in the textbook scandal.
While Newsome refuses to do anything but praise the job Moore has done: “Look at what he’s done and how well rounded this program is. The facilities that we have, the seating at the stadium, what else can you ask for?” he has also refused to close the door on what many anticipate would be a triumphant return to Tuscaloosa at some point in the future.
And all that’s been done is add fuel to the speculative fire.
It was much the same Saturday 6/27/09 as Newsome returned to his collegiate roots for his annual golf outing. Speaking to the Tuscaloosa News, the legendary Crimson Tide tight end once again left the door open for a return home, a return that may or may not include the Athletic Director's job.
“I always allow the information to help me make a decision,” Newsome said when asked about taking the possible position. “There is a lot of information that I would need to get before I could even entertain something like that

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State’s “Little Dawgs Football Camp” concluded on June 12 at 3 p.m. (CST) with the more than 100 campers were taken to Scott Field at Davis Wade Stadium, just like the team does on Saturdays in the Fall.

The highlight of the afternoon is sure to be each camper being introduced onto the field, through the fog machine, by legendary Voice of the Bulldogs Jack Cristil. The SEC ROCKS!!!

Peyton Manning on Lane Kiffin..Tennessee's Head Coach
How has Lane Kiffin done so far as UT's head football coach?
Peyton Manning can't answer that question.
The former Vol and current Indianapolis Colts quarterback said it will be at least 2 years before he can properly evaluate Kiffin, who was announced Dec. 1, 2008, as the 21st head football coach at Tennessee.
"Kind of what I've learned, it's kind of like when we draft players with the Colts," Manning said Monday morning at Fox Den Country Club during a break in a golf tournament fund-raiser. "Two weeks after the draft they say 'well how was the draft?' I used to be wrong. I used to say: 'this guy is great and on and on.'
"My answer now is ask me in 2 years. I'll tell you how we did in the draft. I think it's kind of that same way (with Kiffin)."
Manning met with Kiffin later in the afternoon. It was the second time Kiffin and Manning have met in person since Kiffin was hired.
Manning also worked out with current UT players.
"To be fair to Coach Kiffin, everybody is making a judgment either one way or the other already," Manning said. "I think we need to let Tennessee play some games this year and maybe not just necessarily this year. I know it's a long offseason and it's more time to talk and analyze.
"I'm trying to get to know Lane. I can tell from people I talk to how hard his staff works and how hard the players are working. They're excited, which is good. Everybody should be excited during this time. It takes some time to develop."
Manning said he first met with Kiffin in March during an event for former UT players to meet the new staff.
"I know he is excited," Manning said. "I know he's got a lot of work to do. It (the SEC) is a hard conference. The conference is like the NFL - it's just gotten so competitive. I know they're working hard, and I'm going to pull hard for them." (By Brad Gaskins) The SEC Rocks!

Bryant was the head coach at Kentucky from 1946-53. UK compiled a 60-23-5 record during those eight seasons, including the Wildcats' first four bowl games. Kentucky won the first (and only) Great Lakes Bowl in 1947 and played in the Orange, Sugar and Cotton bowls following the 1949, 1950 and 1951 seasons, respectively. The Cats won the Sugar and Cotton bowl games.
Kentucky's best season under Bryant came in 1950. UK went 11-1, capped by a 13-7 win over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, ending the Sooners' 31-game winning streak. UK is one of four schools that have a claim on the 1950 national championship. At that time, national rankings were finalized before bowl games were played, but an analysis of the 1950 season by the Sagarin Computer Ratings lists UK as the No. 1 team for that season. from Kentucky Football Notebook
At least 30 of the Bear's Boys plan to attend the event, according to Dick Rushing and Bill Evans, who are helping coordinate the reunion. Among the returnees who have committed to participate are:
Quarterback/placekicker George Blanda, who guided the Wildcats to their first bowl game (and win) in school history, and went on to the longest career in pro football history!
All-America quarterback Babe Parilli, who led UK to consecutive appearances in the Orange, Sugar and Cotton bowls
UK football/basketball legend Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones, the only player to have his jersey retired in both sports
In addition to Blanda, Jones and Parilli, the of attendees included Tommy Adkins, Chuck Bell, Jim Bowie, Bill Chambers, Bill Evans, Bob Fry, Ed Hamilton, Jim Hardin, Bob Holt, James Howe, Harry Jones, Lou Karibo, Joe Koch, Neil Lowry, Chet Lukowski, Ken Lutz, Dick Mitchell, Bill Mosley, Jim Proffitt, Harry Rogers, Dick Rushing, Frank Sadler, Millard Shirley, Lee Truman and Clayton Webb. The group will have a reception on Friday, June 19, and a dinner on Saturday, June 20. Vandy needs D again in 2009 SEC season

The Commodores needed a lot of big plays from their defense to have the season they had in 2008, and linebacker Patrick Benoist was involved in plenty of them.
After a while, it became expected, almost natural, to see No. 30 on the ball on nearly every play.
"I think he's sort of a natural football player," said Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson. "He just seems to know where the ball's going."
If Benoist's numbers are any indication, Johnson is right.
Playing at the weakside linebacker position, Benoist ranked 1st on the team and 3rd in the SEC in 2008 with 109 tackles, including 6.5 for loss and 2 sacks, showing an impressive ability to read offensive plays as they unfolded and using his athleticism to make stops.
But while he credits his lateral quickness as an important asset on the field, more important than that is his knowledge of football itself.

Mal Moore...No More?
Imagine for a moment you're Mal Moore. You have just stood in front of the bright lights and flashing cameras again, posing in your best Mount Rushmore gape,to discuss the University of Alabama's penalties from the NCAA.
As you walk back to your vast corner office, friends and co-workers pat you on the back, telling you to hang in there, to keep on keeping on.
You sit back in your easy chair, kick your feet up on the desk, and somewhere in the back of you mind, that mock-Latin aphorism must be resonating...Illegitimi non carborundum. Don't let the b*st*rds grind you down.
But can you survive? Is it really worth fighting the good fight?
The answer to the first question is easy. Your best friend is Paul Bryant Jr. Until Nick Saban achieved celestial status, Bryant had the best name in town and was the Crown Prince of Alabama football. He still matters, and he has let it be known Mal Moore will not be pushed out.
University of Alabama Athletic Director Mal Moore was at the helm during Mike DuBose's tenure, the Albert Means NCAA scandal, the hiring and bizarre resignation of Dennis Franchione, the Mike Price/strip club escapades and the badly bungled hiring and mismanagement of Mike Shula. And those are just football issues. The second question is not so simple. Is there really upside in continuing to do a job in which you have never really been comfortable?
Moore was never supposed to be the athletic director at Alabama. The former Tide quarterback turned top Bear Bryant offensive assistant was supposed to be the head football coach.
Moore thought he had the job, too, when Bryant stepped down in December of 1982. However, Ray Perkins was hired and the first person he fired was Moore.
Moore returned to Alabama seven years later after working at Notre Dame and in the NFL for a last hurrah under Gene Stallings. Eventually, he moved into administration and incredibly, was passed over for AD in favor of Bob Bockrath in 1996 (following another nasty brush with the NCAA).
Finally, after Bockrath crashed and burned in 1999, Moore was brought in and has overseen the fall of Mike DuBose, the Albert Means NCAA scandal, the hiring and bizarre resignation of Dennis Franchione, the Mike Price/strip club escapades and the badly bungled hiring and mismanagement of Mike Shula. And these are just football issues.
It appeared Moore was done on a cold December day in 2006 when Rich Rodriquez shocked Alabama officials by turning down an offer. However, Moore's standing among the faithful quickly rose like the Phoenix from the ashes three weeks later when he brought home Saban from South Florida.
It was the final cherry on Moore's career. The man often referred to as "Malfunction" could do no wrong. Three months later, Moore was honored when the school dedicated the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.
Instead of being given a ceremonial role and quietly heading off to the wilderness, Moore remained as athletic director (with a new contract and raise to$425,000 annually), doing good work as a fund-raiser and being a beloved figure in Alabama folklore.
With another blood red circle on his resume, even longtime Alabama fans are wondering if Moore's time is up. Certainly, Alabama can ill afford more problems with the NCAA. As cataclysmic as it would be, can you imagine how much worse it would be if Moore was still the athletic director?
This November, Moore will celebrate his 10th anniversary as Alabama's athletic director. His work in fund-raising and capital improvement to facilities, such as Bryant-Denny Stadium, is exemplary. On Dec. 19, Moore will celebrate his 70th birthday.
If you're Mal Moore, wouldn't that seem like the right time to exit with your back straight and your head held high? Contact Paul Finebaum at finebaumnet@yahoo.com His column appears Tuesdays in the Press-Register.)

Alabama announces Savage as New Broadcaster
Maybe this isn't the most surprising move ever. We knew Alabama was looking for a new radio color analyst when it became clear Ken Stabler had no intention of returning to the spotlight.
When we learned that Phil Savage would be given a trial run during A-Day, he quickly became the leader in the clubhouse. Now, it's official!
Savage...the former Cleveland Brown General Manager, former Crimson Tide graduate assistant, and current friend of Nick Saban -- is the new radio color analyst for the Crimson Tide Sports Network.

Auburn Rocks the SEC in Revenue
The economy may rattle season ticket sales a bit this time around, but Auburn generated the 6th-highest revenue in college football during the last reporting session. (according to Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal)according to the Birmingham Business Journal on Monday.
Auburn generated $59.67 million in football for 2007-08, the highest in the state. Overall, Auburn was ranked 7th Nationally in overall sports revenue with $89.31 million. The 2008-09 athletic year has not been tabulated, a period in which Auburn had only 7 home games as opposed to 8 in 2007 with 8 this coming season. Still, there is a lot of TV money to go around.
(Texas led the nation in football and overall sports revenue.)

Tennessee Sports Nation Results...Best and Memorable game
The percentage went to the 1998 Tennessee over Florida (20 vs 17) game as the most memorable. Could it not have been also the best in state history? The game that won the percentage for this honor was that of the 2001 Tennessee win over Florida(for the record in the Swamp)was indeed awesome. Although, don't forget, the 1998 game did lead the way to a National Championship! My favorite Vols-Gators game is the 1990 game. Both teams were ranked in the top 10 when the Gators came to Neyland stadium. The Vols were up 7-3 at halftime. Then, ROCK the SEC, Dale Carter runs the second half kick-off back for a TD! That was the final nail on the coffin...the Vols went on to beat the Gators 45-3 that night. Spurrier, speechless, visorless, was totally helpless in stopping the Vols! The SEC ROCKS!

SEC Coaches that led two teams
Houston Nutt has joined a special group of SEC football coaches that have led two schools and won at least 60 career games and a winning percentage over 600.
Topping this list is the legend himself in all of college football, not just the SEC, Paul "Bear" Bryant. Bryant began his coaching career at Kentucky, where he led the Wildcats to 60 wins in his eight years on the sideline.
Five years after he left UK, Bryant return to his alma mater, Alabama and it was there he made his impression 232 wins.
Bryant, wasn't the first SEC coach to change conference addresses.
Mike Donahue who was on the Plains from 1904-06 and 1908-22. From there he continued as he led LSU through the 1927 season.
His teams were known for their defensive prowess. Of the 139 games in which he led Auburn, 99 times his team won,77 were won by blanking the opposition.
Nick Saban returned to the conference this past season, winning 7 of 13 games at Alabama, but has just 37 SEC wins.

SEC Spring Football Practice
Last month concluded spring football practices in the Southeastern Conference. There was a substantial increase in the attendence for the 2008 SEC football season and it truly "ROCKS". One example of that are the attendances at annual spring football games on the 12 SEC campuses this year. More than 450,000 fans attended the spring games, with an average attendance of 37,936. Last year, the SEC spring games drew a total of 373,232 or an average of 31,103 fans per game. So,y'all see the "SEC ROCKS"
