Tennessee held their third scrimmage of the summer this afternoon, and they may have found themselves with a leader for the starting quarterback job.
Jonathan Crompton and Nick Stephens have been neck and neck throughout camp, but the former may have pulled slightly ahead of the latter.
Crompton completed 17 of 31 passes for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Stephens was 9 of 17 for 90 yards and no touchdowns.
All 3 of Crompton's drives ended in touchdowns.
Given the disparity in the statistics, and especially given the very wide disparity in the number of plays each player was involved in, it would seem as though Crompton has indeed placed himself in the lead. Head coach Lane Kiffin, however, wasn't ready to jump to that conclusion.
"Jonathan ended up with more plays," Kiffin said. "That's just how it worked out. It wasn't on purpose."
Kiffin and his staff will now study tapes of the scrimmage, and could very well make a decision on a starter as soon as early this week. Or not. The SEC Rocks!
