Gators' Dunlap,Haden and Spikes named to Bronko Nagurski Watch List

University of Florida junior defensive end Carlos Dunlap (North Charleston, S.C.), junior cornerback Joe Haden (Ft. Washington, Md.) and senior linebacker Brandon Spikes (Shelby, N.C.) were named to the 2009 Bronko Nagurski Watch List, announced today by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. The trophy has been presented since 1993 and is awarded in memory of the legendary Nagurski, an All-America lineman at Minnesota in 1927-29 and a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s.
Dunlap, the Defensive MVP of the BCS National Championship game, tallied 39 tackles, including 21 solo and 18 assisted, while racking up a team-leading 13.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 quarterback sacks in 2008. In addition, he blocked 3 punts in his sophomore campaign, the most of any player under Coach Meyer.
Haden, a pre-season All-American by several media outlets, became the 1st true freshman cornerback to start on opening day for the Gators during the 2007 season, and he has started 26 games in his 2 years on campus. He led UF defensive backs and was 2nd on the team with 87 tackles in 2008, while also intercepting 3 passes. He led the team with 12 pass deflections in each of his first 2 years with the Gators.
Spikes was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy last season after being named a consensus 1st-team All-American and 1st-team All-SEC performer. He was also a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award and Chuck Bednarik Award in 2008. He was 1 of only 5 linebackers in the nation with 2 interception returns for touchdowns last season, which tied the school record. The SEC Rocks!
