With the exception in 2007 that saw them finish tied for third with Alabama and Arkansas, the Bulldogs have not found themselves in any place other than the SEC West basement since 2000. Their last SEC title was in 1941. Their last SEC West title was in 1998, which was followed by a loss to Tennessee in the conference title game.
"Our goal is not to go 5-7," Mullen said. "Our goal is to win the SEC West. Hopefully I'll still be the Mississippi State coach 20 years from now and I'll tell you our goal is to win the national championship. But our every day goal is to win the SEC West."
So, this seems like a very tough job for the second-year coach. Not only does MSU have to deal with a defending national champion in Alabama, but they also have a Gene Chizik-led revival at Auburn and an LSU squad that can win. We shall see, what we will see.
