Auburn out-lasts Mississippi State...17 - 14

Auburn's defense rose to the occasion, stopped Mississippi State's final drive in the closing minute to help the Tigers beat the Bulldogs 17-14 Thursday night in Starkville. The Tigers scored all their points in the first half. The defense did well then and had enough at the end. Defensive lineman Nick Fairley had Auburn going in the first half. His interception set up a touchdown drive and a fumble recovery set up a field goal. Fairley also had two sacks in the first half. Newton threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Emory Blake and a 13-yard TD pass to Darvin Adams. Wes Byrum's 34-yard field goal made it 17-7 with 4:29 left in the second quarter. State scored a touchdown in the third quarter to cut the lead 17-14.
