Auburn QB Cam Newton puts on quite a show in debut

Newton stood so tall, looked like so much of a man among boys, We're pretty sure irate angry Arkansas State parents were demanding to see his birth certificate, the way they do in peewee football when a Goliath appears. In two words, from Huntsville's Quindarius Carr: "He's awesome." Or, in a few more from Arkansas State coach Steve Roberts: "I don't know if I have seen an individual performance better than Cam Newton. He is the best player I have ever seen live." All Newton did was run 15 times for 171 yards (a record for an Auburn quarterback) for two touchdowns, and pass for 186 yards and three touchdowns, going 9-for-14. Coach Gene Chizik said that "for his first football game, I couldn't be prouder of what he did. (But) he will be the first one to tell you he knows there is a lot of work to be done."
