On San Jose State's second play from scrimmage, Tuscaloosa native Brandon Rutley took a handoff, ran to his left, broke a tackle and raced 32 yards into Alabama territory. The Spartans went on to kick a field goal, but those points were all they scored in a 48-3 loss Saturday to Alabama before a capacity crowd of 101,821 in Bryant-Denny Stadium. "We made a good run - ran through a tackle and kept on running," San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre said. "That was a good play there. "Later on they (Bama) swarmed us pretty good. They're an excellent defensive football team. They've got some young athletes out there, but they're athletes. We should have taken advantage of a couple of other third-and-shorts that we didn't take advantage of later in the game that we should have gotten some first downs on." Senior quarterback Jordan La Secla later completed a 49-yard pass to Noel Grigsby, but the Spartans didn't gain much ground otherwise. Alabama held the visitors to 175 total yards and seven first downs. The Spartans converted only one of 13 third-down plays.
