On a night when there was no championship to play for, wouldn't you know Alabama showed flashes of playing like a champion! The offense broke off three long touchdown plays and nearly a fourth, the defense bent but barely broke and the No. 12 Crimson Tide routed No. 19 Mississippi State 30-10 Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Greg McElroy threw for 227 yards in the first half as the Tide built a 20-3 lead. A rushing attack that was stifled in the first half broke a little loose in the second half, and Alabama's defense did its part. The big plays were a 45-yard touchdown pass from McElroy to Marquis Maze, a short pass from McElroy that Mark Ingram turned into a 78-yard touchdown and a 56-yard touchdown run on a reverse by wide receiver Julio Jones. Backup quarterback AJ McCarron threw a 39-yard pass to Darius Hanks that came up 1 yard short of a touchdown, setting up a field goal.
Mississippi State trailed 30-3 when it finally scored a touchdown on a 27-yard pass from backup quarterback Tyler Russell to Chad Bumpus with 8:08 left in the game.
